The apple is a very popular fruit in the collective imagination since its mention in the Bible and in numerous fictional stories. Now, did you know that this fruit is also known to be the fruit of beauty and eternal life? In fact, the Romans looked for it with great interest to consume it because they believed that it granted immortality.

According to a study by the National Institute of Health of the United States, eating an apple a day can be beneficial for our body and to improve our health in general.

To reach this conclusion, a survey was conducted of 8,400 people, of which 10% ate an apple daily. This same percentage of patients was the one who reported a lower consumption of medications during one year (period of duration of the investigation).

According to team leader Matthew Davis of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, apple consumption was not related to other markers, such as the number of annual visits to the doctor.

Another conclusion was that those who ate a piece of apple a day were less likely to smoke and had a higher return on their education.

The apple is a food that provides calcium, iron, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also catechins, pectins (which act as a soluble fiber), amino acids, various acids (glutamine, linoleic, malic, oleic, palmitic and caffeic), sugars (glucose, sucrose and fructose), quercetin and sorbitol.

In the popular sphere , apples are considered to help digest fat better. Therefore, it may be a good idea to eat apple, as a dessert, after a main meal.

Reasons to eat an apple a day

The apple provides vitamin C, soluble fiber and flavonoids, hence it is very beneficial to take it often. It is recommended to include it in snacks and appetizers, since this way we will maintain a much healthier diet.

Benefits of eating an apple every day:

  • Hydrates thanks to its high water content (around 80% of its composition).
  • It is diuretic and thanks to its potassium intake it can help reduce fluid accumulation and prevent muscle cramps.
  • It contains group E vitamins, known to be antioxidants.
  • Source of soluble and insoluble fiber. Suitable  for both people with constipation and diarrhea. In the first case, it should be eaten raw and with the skin on; and in the second, roasted or in the form of compote.
  • The skin of the apple has pectin, which protects the intestinal mucosa.  For this reason, it is recommended to wash it, but not peel it. Pectin helps to maintain a good intestinal transit.

Some have the hypothesis that eating an apple could help you be more productive, remember more data and perform better in any area. However, the researchers comment that it would be necessary to go deeper into this.

At the time, it was considered that, perhaps, the healthiest apple would be the red one, since it could provide the highest amount of antioxidants. However, this is not yet proven.
