Recipes For Dizziness: Are They Effective?

Dizziness is a common discomfort characterized by the feeling that everything around us is spinning, even when closing our eyes. It can cause nausea, vomiting, vertigo, loss of balance, and even fainting. In some cases they are temporary, but in others they can last for days (depending on the cause, of course).

Commonly, they appear on trips. Especially when we are driving on roads that are too convoluted, full of curves. Although they can also be experienced in journeys by sea or other aquatic environments (lakes, rivers).

Physiologically speaking, dizziness is caused by overstimulation of the semicircular canals of the inner ear. Yes, this part of the body is responsible for perceiving changes in the position of the head and maintaining balance.

Dizziness and its possible causes

There are many types of dizziness and, in the same way, multiple causes. Some of them are:

  • Fatigue.
  • Anxiety.
  • Alcoholism.
  • Smoking
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Dehydration
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Excessive consumption of caffeine
  • Imbalances in blood pressure.
  • Consumption of certain medications.
  • Pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.
  • Ear and spinal problems.

Some advices

To avoid dizziness, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. 
  • Take breaks if you feel fatigued and try to get a good night’s rest every day.
  • In case dizziness is a consequence of taking any medication, consult your doctor because it may be necessary to reduce the dose or change the drug.
  • When dizziness is accompanied by nausea, you can try taking an over-the-counter antihistamine.
  • In the event that dizziness is caused by heat stroke or dehydration, it is important that you rest in a cool place and drink water (in small sips).

Remedies to combat dizziness

There are some natural remedies that can help combat travel sickness. It is important that, before using them, we discuss it with the doctor to know if they are the most indicated (or not) for our case.

Milk thistle remedy

This plant is an active part of products that can relieve hangovers. That is why it is believed to act favorably on the symptoms of dizziness. To prepare the remedy, boil a liter of water and add 5 grams of dried milk thistle leaves and another 5 grams of seeds. Let it rest for a few minutes and sweeten if it tastes very bitter.  Drink this remedy before doing any movement or trip of any kind.

Apple against seasickness

Its vasodilator properties make the apple a good ally to relieve dizziness. Cook an apple until you can extract the juice. Take one or two hot teaspoons every hour.

Ginger and cinnamon tea

The  ginger  has proven qualities to treat motion sickness, while cinnamon is  an excellent stimulant.

Ingredients

  • 2 slice of ginger.
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Juice of ½ lemon.
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).
  • Honey (to taste)

Process

Heat the water and when it comes to a boil, add the ginger and cinnamon. Leave it covered and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the juice of half a lemon and honey to sweeten. Let it rest. It is recommended to drink one or two cups of this tea daily.

Ginger pieces

To combat dizziness and nausea we can take advantage of the properties of ginger. Chew a piece of ginger with honey. This remedy is ideal for pregnant women.

Anise

Anise is another home remedy to calm nausea and dizziness. Of course, be careful, because according to some studies, it could be dangerous if we do not advise ourselves well first.

This remedy is prepared by boiling 1 teaspoon of seeds in 1/2 liter of milk. Take it hot.

When to see the doctor?

If dizziness continues to occur regularly and prevents normal life, it will be essential to see a doctor as soon as possible for an evaluation. It is not recommended to ignore discomfort under any circumstances.
