Pie With Mashed Potatoes And Minced Meat

The mashed potato and minced meat pie is a unique dish, delicious and very easy to prepare.

With some potatoes, vegetables and minced meat, we can make a kind of lasagna in which the pasta is substituted for a delicious and smooth mashed potatoes.

In a single dish, the meat is combined with a side of potatoes, and with a crunchy touch of  grated cheese and au gratin pine nuts.

It is not necessary to accompany this dish, as it is quite filling. If your guests are quite hungry, you can put a light salad to accompany it.

In this recipe you can also take advantage of the meat that has been left over from a stew or stew, so you don’t throw food away and you have another delicious dish for another day. 

Origin of the mashed potato and minced meat pie

The mashed potato and minced meat pie comes from Anglo-Saxon cuisine, where it is called cottage pie. In England, since the 18th century, it is a very popular recipe. The humble people took advantage of the remains of meat and accompanied them with a mashed potatoes.

With emigration to the United States, this recipe also became very popular in that country, being also very traditional. In Latin America it also spread and is called potato cake.

We are going to show you two variants of how to make this fantastic dish:

The pie of mashed potato and minced meat

Ingredients:

  • 500 g of minced beef
  • 800 g potatoes
  • Two medium carrots
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • ¼ glass of wine (white or red)
  • 100 g of fried tomato (homemade)
  • 70 g of Parmesan cheese
  • 70 ml of extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper

Utensils:

  • Cooking pot
  • Frying pan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Baking dish
  • Spatula

preparation:

  • Preheat the oven to 200º C.
  • We prepare the mashed potatoes. To do this, wash and peel the potatoes. In a pot with salt and boiling water, cook the potatoes for half an hour. Take them out of the pot, mash with a fork or pass them through the food processor, sprinkle with salt, pepper and reserve.
  • We prepare the minced meat. Take  the onions, carrots and garlic, chop everything and fry it all in a pan.
  • Do the same with the tomatoes and add them together with the olives. Saute everything.
  • Add salt, pepper and chopped parsley to the meat and add everything to the pan with the other ingredients. Add a splash of red wine and tomato sauce. Cook and beat with the wooden spoon until the minced meat is loose.
  • For the assembly, prepare a  dish suitable for the oven, place half of the mashed potato as a base.
  • On top, place the minced meat mixture together with the vegetables.
  • Top with the other half of the mashed potato.
  • Sprinkle with grated cheese on top.
  • Put the mashed potato and minced meat pie in the oven at 200º C for about 10 minutes.
  • Let cool to room temperature.
  • Cut portions and serve them with a spatula on different plates. You can garnish with parsley. 

Pie of mashed potatoes and minced meat with gratin cheese and pine nuts 

Ingredients (6 people):

  • 500 g minced meat
  • 5 potatoes
  • 5 dried tomatoes
  • 2 onions
  • 2 garlic
  • 100 g of grated cheese (for gratin)
  • Water
  • 15 black olives (pitted)
  • 50 g pine nuts
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Parsley

preparation:

  • Preheat the oven to 200º C.
  • We prepare the mashed potatoes. Wash and peel the potatoes. In a pot with salt and boiling water, cook them for half an hour. When they are ready you must drain them and mash them with a fork. Season with salt, pepper and reserve.
  • To prepare the meat, sauté the garlic and onion in a pan. Do the same with the tomatoes and add them together with the olives.
  • Add the salt, pepper and chopped parsley and add together with the other ingredients.
  • In a dish suitable for the oven, place half of the mashed potato as a base.
  • On top, place the mixture of minced meat and vegetables.
  • Finish with the other half of mashed potato.
  • Sprinkle with grated cheese and pine nuts on top.
  • Put the mashed potato and minced meat pie in the oven at 200º C for about 10 minutes.
  • When ready cut into portions.
