Fast Metabolism Diet, How It Works

The Fast Metabolism Diet (DMA), created by American nutritionist Haylie Pomroy, ensures that you can lose weight by eating more and better.

According to its creator, this dietary method will allow you to lose up to 10 kg in just 28 days. How? By ingesting specific nutrients at strategic times, in order to reactivate a slow metabolism and help you burn fat.

What is the fast metabolism diet all about?

Haylie Pomroy designed a healthy and varied diet plan, with the aim that food is not your main enemy when it comes to losing weight. On the contrary, the idea is that it becomes the remedy and the energy necessary to accelerate your metabolism.

In his book The Fast Metabolism Diet , Pomroy states that “you are going to eat a lot, and still you are going to lose weight. What you are not going to do is count a single gram of calories or fat that you eat ”. All according to a simple plan, specially designed to induce precise physiological changes that in theory will allow you to accelerate your metabolism.

It is important to mention that the diet does not have any scientific support. It seems to work mostly because it eliminates junk food, increases your intake of certain nutrients, and is combined with a good amount of physical exercise. There is no evidence that certain foods speed up your metabolism enough to cause weight loss.

How does it work?

Basically, the metabolism diet is divided into three phases that are distributed  from Monday to Sunday and are repeated for four consecutive weeks:

  • First phase (Monday and Tuesday): you must consume a lot of carbohydrates and fruits.
  • Second phase (Wednesday and Thursday): you have to eat a lot of protein of animal origin and “alkalizing” vegetables.
  • Third phase (Friday, Saturday and Sunday): in addition to all of the above, you will need to add more healthy fats and oils.

Remember that, depending on the diet, you must repeat this plan for 28 consecutive days to notice results.

Do you need to exercise?

In each of these phases you need to exercise. You can distribute it in the three stages as follows: a cardio workout (in phase 1), then an anaerobic one (in phase 2) and, finally, doing a physical activity that relaxes your body (in phase 3).

Exercise will undoubtedly contribute to a more active metabolism. This is also stated in this study carried out by the University of La Frontera (Chile).

Indications for the DMA diet

Eat five times a day

The basic dishes are breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will include two snacks between meals, one in the middle of the morning and the other in the middle of the afternoon.

Eat every two to four hours

The minimum space you must have between one meal and another is two hours, while the maximum period is four hours. Certainly, this rule does not apply when we are sleeping.

Have breakfast when you wake up

You must have breakfast within the first hour after waking up, you cannot skip any breakfast. This is considered essential for your metabolism to kick in quickly.

You must, at least, complete the four weeks of this regimen. You can extend the diet until you reach the desired weight and then repeat the 3 phases one week a month as maintenance.

Respect each phase and its food

According to the author, you must respect the order and food of each stage of the plan to obtain results. Do not mix, change or invest. Try to eat organic foods and avoid processed meats.

Forbidden food

Like other diets, the Fast Metabolism Diet prohibits the intake of certain foods such as :

  • Dairy products
  • Corn
  • Wheat (only those that are sprouted are allowed)
  • Soy
  • Alcohol
  • Refined sugars
  • Caffeine
  • Light products
  • Dried fruit
  • Artificial sweeteners

Make sure to ditch fast food, junk, or junk. These products contain unhealthy fats, all kinds of sugars and refined flours that only serve, among other things, to slow down the metabolism and make us gain weight.

Health benefits

Haylie Pomroy explains that this healthy whole food distribution aims to calm the adrenal glands, decrease stress on the liver and nourish the thyroid. However, these claims have no scientific basis.

The purpose, according to the nutritionist, is to increase the production of the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which are mainly responsible for a rapid metabolism.

In addition, he adds that the diet of accelerated metabolism helps reduce stress and, consequently, the hormone cortisol, responsible for promoting the accumulation of visceral fat (which is located in the belly).

Similarly, it ensures that with this diet you can reduce the chances of suffering from health problems such as:
