Of course, you must bear in mind that it can vary both in calories and nutrients depending on how it is prepared. So, in order not to get out of the concept of a healthy diet, accompany corn tortillas as healthy ingredients and low in calories like vegetables.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of cornmeal, white or whole (144 g)
- ¾ cup of warm water (180 ml)
- ¼ teaspoon of salt (1 g)
With these three simple ingredients we can prepare the tortillas. Then, we will use different added ingredients according to the type of flavor we want to provide.
What should we do?
- First, prepare the corn tortillas by mixing the corn flour with the warm water in a bowl.
- Knead the mixture with your hands until you get a dough that is as smooth as it is moist.
- At that point, separate the dough into several parts and with each one form a ball with your hands.
- Place each of these balls in a very hot skillet. Then, with the help of a wooden board or similar, flatten them, being careful not to burn yourself with the pan.
- Another option for its preparation is to place the balls on a griddle, which will help to flatten them more easily.
- Control the cooking of the dough for a few minutes until the surface of the tortillas has browned on both sides.
- When you have reached this point and the tortillas are properly browned, remove and reserve them, placing them on a clean kitchen towel.
Add color and flavor to corn tortillas
With the previous steps we can prepare the corn tortillas in their standard format, without added flavors. When it comes to adding different touches to the preparation, you can add certain ingredients to the dough, before cooking them in the pan or on the grill.
- If you want a reddish color and a green flavor, add 2 tablespoons of sweet paprika (30 g) or ½ cup of pureed red peppers (50 g).
- For a yellow color, add 2 tablespoons of turmeric (30 g) and integrate this spice well with the dough.
- If we want a green color, we must add 5 or 6 sprigs of coriander and integrate them well into the mixture, to chop them so that they do not give rise to lumps during cooking.
Another option to achieve this green color and an interesting flavor is to add ¼ cup of kale or kale (20 g), which we must also crush well to avoid lumps.
- For orange flavored corn tortillas, add ¼ cup carrot, shredded or grated into very thin strips.
- Finally, to get a violet color in the corn tortillas, we can add a few tablespoons of steamed beets to the mixture, and then turned into a puree.
